Our Work

Recognizing the high maternal mortality rates within densely populated marginalized communities in Ghana, Mother’s Roots Initiative implements community-centered, culturally appropriate programs designed to improve health outcomes for pregnant women, mothers, and children under five in Ghana’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

01

  • Antenatal Care

The program begins with community sensitization and enrollment campaigns, engaging local leaders and households to raise awareness about the importance of early and consistent prenatal care. Through door-to-door outreach, community forums, and provision of antenatal care through clinics in our network,  we ensure that women, especially those in marginalized areas receive holistic care from the earliest stages of pregnancy.

  • Goals

    • Reduce maternal and neonatal mortality

    • Foster a culture of trust and care around pregnancy and childbirth

    •  Improve birth outcomes

02

The Maternal Support Circle is a cornerstone program of Mother’s Roots Initiative. This program provides a safe, nurturing space where expectant and new mothers can connect, share experiences, and receive critical support throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

  • Goals

  • Address the social and emotional needs of mothers

  • Reduce preventable complications

  • Build a network of care that extends beyond the clinical setting.

Emergency Transportation Services (Ambulance, Referrals)

Our Emergency Services Program is designed to provide timely, affordable, and culturally responsive transportation services targeted at maternal, neonatal, and pediatric emergencies. Through partnerships with trained paramedics, local drivers, hospitals and clinics, this program aims to reduce preventable deaths and improve health outcomes by ensuring that individuals (especially marginalized pregnant women and infants) would be able to access hospitals and clinics without delay.

Nutrition & Supplement Distribution

This program addresses the critical gaps in dietary intake among pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children. Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies continue to pose significant health risks for our program beneficiaries and contribute to complications during pregnancy. It also results in low birth weights and developmental delays in children.

Through our Nutrition and Supplement distribution program, we distribute essential supplements—including iron, folic acid, prenatal vitamins, and fortified nutritional powders—alongside culturally appropriate, nutrient-rich foods.

  • Goals

    • Provide consistent access to life-saving nutrients

    • Reinforce the role of adequate nutrition in long-term health and development

Advocacy

At MRI, we realize that positive change is a gradual process requiring input from stakeholders invested in maternal health. As a result, we advocate for policies that protect the rights and well-being of mothers. Our advocacy efforts include:

  • Conducting awareness campaigns on maternal rights

  • Engaging in policy dialogue and grassroots advocacy at the local and national level
